I agree it seems pretty extreme that the mother would be able to kill the entire village by herself. The smoke monster never killed with fire before. the mother also seem to have knoweledge of things that she shouldn't, like knowing Jacob and MIB were playing a game, knowing that Jacobs was visiting MIB's village. It could be that the smoke monster was posing as the mother. 2
I'm guessing the standin-mother had some kind of higher-level destructive power than the mere "hit someone in the head" stuff we actually got to see. That village was razed, and the well was completely filled in. This is more than any ordinary person could have done.

Wow, I think you are on to something with this conclusion!
It almost seemed like the light ate and the regurgitated MIB's soul as the smoke monster. ( Do we have a name for the Man in the Black Cloak / Jacob's brother? )
Perhaps Esau like Jacob and Esau twin brothers in the Bible.
Wow, Jacob swindled and stole the birthright from Esau. In the bible referenses Esau was born first. In the eps on LOST Jacob was born first. I'm wondering if that was a mistake by the writers/directors.
I do give credit for this theory and it would explain why "they" have not given us Jacob's brothers name (MIB) name.
